Charged by Delta-Q Feature: Discover Battery

The “Charged by Delta-Q” program was created to build a community for OEMs, battery and battery management system (BMS) manufacturers, and facilitate innovation and collaboration among the electric battery, charging and equipment sectors. Partnering with industry-leading battery and BMS companies will help OEMs reduce the technical risk and time spent researching and testing batteries and chargers to find compatible electric power systems. All battery companies that are part of this program have had their optimized products iteratively tested and validated with Delta-Q chargers.

We are excited to have Discover Battery be a part of the launch of our program and bring optimized and compatible solutions to the marketplace alongside Delta-Q. To help our customers and audience learn more about Discover Battery and their participation in the “Charged by Delta-Q” program, we interviewed Derek Pettingale, Director of Product Management – Lithium Battery Products.

What makes Discover Battery stand apart as a battery manufacturer?

Derek Pettingale: Discover Battery has a long 70-year history in the lead-acid battery business with many notable innovations over the years. Over the last decade, our company has been designing and manufacturing lithium batteries, focusing on motive and energy storage models with an internal high current Battery Management System (BMS) and J1939 / CAN-based communications for closed-loop integration.

What industries does Discover Battery cater to?

Derek Pettingale: Discover Battery leads the industry in designing, manufacturing, and distributing leading-edge battery technologies to the transportation, motive power, and energy storage industries. Our lithium battery brands target solar and stationary energy storage, industrial motive and mobile energy storage applications.

Why did Discover Battery join the Charged by Delta-Q program?

Derek Pettingale: For nearly a decade, Discover Battery has been working with Delta-Q to develop charging algorithms for both lead-acid and lithium batteries. The ‘Charged by Delta-Q’ program provides us with the opportunity to formalize what we have been doing and now promote it to a broader audience of potential partners and OEMs around the globe.

What products are Discover Battery featuring in the Charged by Delta-Q program?

Derek Pettingale: Discover Battery’s AES LiFePO4 industrial lithium battery line was the first, with an optimized charge algorithm and closed-loop J1939 implementations for OEMs like ORBOT, Kärcher and others. LITHIUM PRO will launch and join the program shortly with a new optimized charge algorithm and closed-loop J1939 / CAN-based communications.

What are the key benefits that OEMs will get by working with Discover Battery and the Charged by Delta-Q program?

Derek Pettingale: Compatible closed-loop Delta-Q charging with LITHIUM PRO and AES LiFePO4 lithium batteries by Discover Battery allows OEMs to provide a new paradigm of ultra-fast charging, more available uptime, significantly longer battery life and the elimination of regular battery service.

What market trends are Discover Battery most excited about, and what is the company doing to help OEMs?

Derek Pettingale: We are talking with OEMs worldwide that are taking a more substantial interest in using communication to integrate machine systems with the battery and charger. All are interested in the benefits of a better, faster battery/on-board charger solution. Still, many are also excited by what we can contribute to telemetry utilizing our plug-and-play J1939, CANopen and other CAN-based closed-loop communications.

What is the most interesting project that Discover Battery has worked on recently?

Derek Pettingale: We recently integrated eight packaged systems to power refrigerated food delivery trucks deployed at Vancouver International Airport with several partners involved. Each system features four AES LiFePO4 Lithium batteries in parallel with two parallel Delta-Q IC1200 chargers in a closed-loop configuration. The critical challenge Discover Battery overcame required having the Delta-Q IC chargers operating in parallel to be driven directly by data over J1939 from four AES LiFePO4 Lithium batteries, also running in parallel.
