CEC battery charger efficiency regulations take effect on January 1, 2017

All Delta-Q Technologies industrial battery chargers have full CEC compliance. 

BURNABY, BC, CANADA – August 10, 2015 – A wide range of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), distributors and end-users will be affected by California Energy Commission (CEC) energy efficiency standards for battery chargers taking effect on January 1, 2017.

Among the affected applications are forklifts, floor care machines, aerial work platforms (scissor and boom lifts), floor care machines, and railways (crossings and back-up power infrastructure). All battery chargers used in non-consumer applications with an output power level of less than two kilowatts (<2 kW) are included. Previous phases of CEC regulations covered consumer chargers and large battery charging systems (<2 kW).

Chargers manufactured on or after January 1, 2017 that do not bear the CEC regulatory approval logo—a “BC” mark surrounded by a circle—cannot be sold and supplied in the state of California. For OEMs selling their products in California, existing charging components should be checked for compliance and alternatives designed into systems prior to the effective date.

The incoming regulations require that all battery chargers sold in California must operate at certain levels of energy efficiency. Traditional charging technologies may not meet this standard, including widely used ferroresonant and silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) designs. 

A searchable database of approved chargers is available on the CEC website. Compliant Delta-Q models include the IC650 (650 W), QuiQ 1000 (1000 W), QuiQ 1500 (1500 W) and SC-48 Charger for E-Z-GO®. Upcoming IC Series chargers will also meet the efficiency regulations.

Customers using high efficiency Delta-Q chargers will use less electricity and enjoy a lower total cost of ownership versus traditional chargers used in industrial applications. The company operates a CEC-certified battery lab to conduct the required tests, which include measuring the energy consumed by the charger during “charge mode” and “maintenance mode,” and comparing it with the energy returned by the battery during discharge.
